Autism Spectrum Disorder represents a spectrum of symptoms including social difficulties and repetitive stereotyped ways of behaving and thinking; it can almost seem as if the brain gets stuck. Behaviors suggestive of ASD include having low muscle tone as an infant, abnormal crawling, toe walking, frequent and prolonged tantrums as toddlers, overly shy/withdrawn even with familiar people, inconsistent eye contact, lack of gestures, trouble understanding teasing in fun or sarcasm, not using their words and rather pointing or hoping you read their mind, difficulties with transitions (need warnings before doing something), not appropriately acknowledging others when first seeing them or saying good-bye when leaving, unusual repetitive interests (wants everything Minecraft, or just really loves using the copier over and over), sensory issues (clothes don't feel right or noises are too loud). Other key phrase I often hear that signal possible ASD are “an outside the box thinker”, “dances to the beat of his own drum”, and “gets along better with adults than kids" Girls in particular are often misdiagnosed or undiagnosed. I have learned so much from my Autistic patients and their families over the years. I have empathy for how difficult the social world can be for someone with ASD and am also amazed by all the wonderful people who I've met with ASD. Parents often experience relief once they understand that they are raising a neurodivergent child, and are better able to support their child. My goal is to help you and your child better understand themselves, highlighting their strengths and identify effective ways to manage challenges. I also want to advocate for your child and help parents to become their biggest advocate.
